SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Jerry Hayes
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THE TALK IS FREE\, BUT RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!\nAttendance is expected to be high!  Anyone choosing to eat\, will have two meal options that must be pre-ordered and paid in advance no later than June 5th. Use the form at the bottom of this page! \nJerry Hayes\, editor at Bee Culture Magazine\, will be discussing the all-important topic of mite measurement and mitigation. This one is not to be missed\, especially by newer beekeepers. We at SIBA push the importance of mite management pretty hard... maybe so much that it makes newer beekeepers heads spin. The fact is\, the best thing a beekeeper can do is put proper priority on colony health... which entails actively measuring and managing mites and the sicknesses they vector. Jerry will put proper perspective on the topic and answer your questions. Tell your friends! \nBiography\nJerry Hayes started out in life as a High School teacher. He hated it. He went into another business where he worked with a beekeeper. Back many years ago Jerry knew about Honey Bees but nobody actually knew a ‘Beekeeper’\, did they? Jerry asked him questions\, picked his brain\, became more interested and fascinated and started reading everything he could get his hands on about Honey Bees. He turned into the consummate backyard beekeeper. He did all the fun and crazy things backyard beekeepers do and built and experimented with. He wondered if he could get into the Beekeeping world and support a young family. So\, with the support of his family he went back to school under the tutelage of Dr. Jim Tew\, at The Ohio State University. “Top 10 Best thing I ever did\,” Jerry said. \nYears later he looks back on his opportunities as a Research Technician at the USDA/ARS Baton Rouge Bee Lab\, Dadant and Sons Regional Mgr.\, Dadant And Sons New Product Dev.\, and AR Mgr.\, Chief of the Apiary Section for the Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services\, Monsanto Honey Bee Lead\, VP. of Vita Bee health North America and now Editor of Bee Culture magazine with awe and amazement. \nAdd to the above the Classroom Q&A Column of the American Bee Journal for almost 40 years\, the ‘Classroom’ Book\, Author or Co-Author on 23 research papers and a variety of Honey Bee related articles in a variety of publications. Plus\, Past President of Apiary Inspectors of America\, Heartland Apiculture Assoc.\, Colony Collapse Working Group\, CAPS Science Advisor\, PAm Science Advisor\, AHPA Science Advisor and many Professional Presentations internationally and media opportunities. And Now Editor of Bee Culture magazine. It has been a Great Journey.

SUMMARY:SIBA at the State Fair Saturday August 12th
DESCRIPTION:The Indiana State Fair is coming up fast. August 12th is the day the club is on board to run the Honey booth in the Hort/Ag building. We could use your help! The Fair is the main fundraiser and an important educational opportunity for the Beekeepers of Indiana. It is a good chance for SIBA to raise some funds as well. The club will benefit from your help and SIBA is going to cover your cost of parking. \nMost of what you will do is retail work and no great beekeeping knowledge is required. You get into the Fair for free\, work a six hour shift and have the rest of the day for your own fun. The booth makes a great place to regroup and cool down and store things you don’t want to drag around the grounds till you go home. Please come join us! \n\n \nContact Jeff Montag with any questions! \nVisit the fair website by clicking here.

SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Jason Morgan and Jeff Ginn will be demonstrating the alcohol wash to get an accurate mite count in your colonies. Bring your veil and a chair if you like. Anyone is welcome to come up as close as they like and look in the hive\, ask questions\, etc. This demonstration is for YOU. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Candy Boards!
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Montag will lead a timely roundtable discussion and demonstration on candy boards. \nWe love them as SIBA! They provide extra food stores\, they wick moisture\, and provide an escape for too much condensation. \nThey also can provide an upper entrance to use during the winter defecating flights in the event the lower entrance is blocked by snow\, debris or dead bees. \nCandy boards lend a bit of extra assurance in many areas. Are you interested? Then\, we'll see you Thursday!! \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! The SIBA Christmas Party is scheduled for Fri\, Dec. 15th at 6:30pm and THERE WILL BE NO DECEMBER MEETING!  \nThe Christmas Party evolved from a meeting way back when in December when we were covering mead making (making wine from honey) as an off-season topic. Other mead and winemakers in the club brought some of their samples. Of course food was in order... so it grew into a jovial gathering of friends who each had unique talents and creations to share. \nBring a dish (a main dish\, appetizer\, or dessert) to share of your choice. If you are a wine or mead-maker\, bring along one of your latest to share. We'll have some small dixie cups to sample with. In the past\, we have seen\, cheese\, cured meats\, pickled and fermented foods to try. We've also seen some pretty creative desserts come from our membership at past Christmas parties. See the honeycomb cake pictures above. \nThe primary goal of the Christmas party is to celebrate and reflect on the season\, both successes and failures... and talk about them with great company and some good food and drink. While this is a family-friendly event and you're encouraged to bring your spouse or significant other\, (especially if we've never met them\,) just know that alcohol will be present and served in a responsible manner. \nHope to see you and we wish everyone happy\, safe and healthy holidays with lots of friends and family! \n

SUMMARY:Louisville Beekeeping and Research Conference by Apis Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 27\, 2024\, at 9am\, doors at 8am\, and runs til 6pm \nHigh colony losses severely impact beekeeping outcomes. However\, some beekeepers have achieved great success in the same environment with high survival rates. What sets them apart? \nMany beekeepers never progress beyond the beginner level and miss out on the opportunity to learn advanced skills and alternative approaches for success. This dearth of next-stage skills and alternative approaches is the reason why some beekeepers fail. \nThis conference aims to highlight those differences and equip beekeepers with the necessary tools for successful beekeeping. Attending the conference gives you the opportunity to witness some of the best beekeeping content in the United States\, presented in Intermediate\, Advanced\, and Research tracks. The Research track focuses on the latest discoveries and how they can be applied in beekeeping. \nUniversity of Louisville Conference Center (old Shelby campus)\n450 N Whittington PKWY Louisville KY 40222 \n\nGeneral Admission: $65 Includes lunch\, parking\, and end-of-day door prize raffle ticket.\nVendor Admission: $85 Includes one admission\, lunch\, parking\, and 8X10 booth space.\nVIP Admission: $200 Includes one admission\, lunch\, parking\, five end-of-day door prize raffle tickets\, and Friday night VIP dinner with speakers.\n\n(VIP Admissions are limited to 5)

SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Bryan Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Copeland will cover the topic of building swarm traps and trapping swarms. This is a good one even for new beekeepers. Instead of buying bees and bringing them in from another region\, why not trap local bees already acclimated to our area\, and best of all\, they're free! Building a couple swarm traps is simple\, and cheap! It's time to get those traps ready as swarm season is among us! SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Tyson Hermes
DESCRIPTION:Tyson Hermes will cover the topic of splits! Have you wanted to increase your apiary without purchasing packages or nucs from other beekeepers?  Then this is the talk for you. Tyson will explain a simple way of splitting a winter-survivor colony to produce 3 or 4 (up to 8!) new colonies! Splits also help facilitate a robust honey crop and is a form of varroa control as it disrupts the brood with what is called a brood-break. \nTyson Hermes is a Catholic\, a husband to Julie\, a dad to 3 kids\, a beekeeper for 14 years\, a construction business owner\, a ski instructor\, and an Erlanger city councilman. When Tyson started beekeeping\, he was mentored by Jim Orem and Paul Lageman.  Since then\, Tyson has mentored dozens of new beekeepers\, and frequently gives talks to generate interest in the craft. Tyson’s primary goals in beekeeping is to produce nucs for sale\, and to help new beekeepers get started. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Mike Bentz
DESCRIPTION:Our own Doc Bentz will present on "Post-harvest clean-up and Winter Preparation." What to do with our supers after robbing the last honey harvest and how should we store the over the winter? Winter preparation keeps the beekeeper just as busy as waking up the hives in the spring. After a long\, tiring season\, it's important to pay due attention to winter storage and clean-up so that our drawn comb and other equipment is ready to go for the next season. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA at the 2024 Indiana State Fair
DESCRIPTION:SIBA will be manning the booth in the Ag/Hort building on Sat. Aug. 3. The day is divided into two shifts... morning and afternoon. The booth needs 10 people per shift. Contact Mary Ruehl to volunteer! \nThe Indiana State Fair is coming up fast. Saturday August 3rd is the day the club is on board to run the Honey booth in the Hort/Ag building. \nVisit the State Fair website

SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Round table with Jeff Montag
DESCRIPTION:For August\, Jeff Montag will lead a round table discussion on mite monitoring and control. The honey is harvested and now it's time to check in on the health of your hives. Seasoned beekeepers will argue that the next years bee season starts NOW because now is the time to get an accurate measurement of the mite loads in your colonies. Now is the time to understand if you really need to treat your colonies before the weather gets chilly and time runs out. Bees that go into the winter with higher mite loads get sick and end up perishing in the spring from a variety of diseases. Many of us are pinching queens and replacing them with known stock while others choose a treatment to knock mites down to acceptable levels. \nThis is a great opportunity to bring the burning mite questions that you've been meaning to ask! Mite mitigation efforts now really pay off in the spring and get your colonies off on the right foot. Join us Thursday and bring a friend! \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. Meetings are held at 6:30pm at the Sunman American Legion unless otherwise stated ahead of time in the newsletter and website. We're also looking for volunteers to help make the club GO.
