SUMMARY:SIBA General Meeting - Splits\, Jason Morgan
DESCRIPTION:The topic for April will be splits! Splitting hives is one of the most useful tools in beekeeping... whether you’re trying to prevent swarming\, increase colony count\, or recover from losses. The “best” method really depends on your goal\, timing\, and what resources (bees\, brood\, queens) you have available. \nJust ahead of Jim Orem's Saturday field day on April 18 and the fact we're heading into splitting season\, a discussion on splits is perfectly timed. Jason Morgan will lead the meeting with a review of the Whats\, Whys and Whens of different types of splits\, in an open discussion format. We'll discuss different types of splits and when you might use one versus another. \nUPDATE: View the Slide Deck Jason presented at the meeting. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. Meetings are held at 6:30pm at the Sunman American Legion unless otherwise stated ahead of time in the newsletter and website. We're also looking for volunteers to help make the club GO. Contact us to let us know you are interested in helping out! \nCheck the website or Facebook for the latest information. \n\nSIBA Facebook Page - General Announcements\, etc.\nSIBA Instagram Page\nDiscussion Group - Bee questions answered within 24 hours

SUMMARY:SIBA General Meeting - Garry Reeves
DESCRIPTION:At our March meeting\, SIBA founding member Garry Reeves will present “My Journey into Beekeeping: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly.” Garry has grown his operation to more than 200 hives and brings decades of hands-on experience to the table. With healthy\, prolific honey-producing bees\, he’s truly seen it all—successes\, setbacks\, and plenty of hard-earned lessons along the way. Garry will share the mistakes he’s made\, what he’s learned from them\, and practical tips and insights that beekeepers at any stage can take back to their own apiaries. This is a talk you won’t want to miss. 🐝 \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Local 4th generation farmers\, Allen and Jayme Beneker\, gave a very informative presentation on their plans and process for building a new Regional Agricultural Education & Event Center\, which will be located on their Beneker Family Farms\, in southern Franklin County.  They currently operate a self-serve retail store on their farm\, where besides selling their own farm raised beef\, they sell locally produced honey products and other regionally produced food items. \nWhen complete\, their event and learning center will house multiple inspected commercial kitchens\, not only for their processing needs\, but for other food producers and educators to use for their own processing and educational opportunities.  The facilities will be available for various meetings\, seminars and conferences\, as well as receptions and other group gatherings.  They envision holding festivals on the campus as well.  These facilities and operation will be a great addition to our regional community\, and a valuable resource for local beekeepers and other food and goods producers in the area.  The Benekers hope to break ground yet this year\, with completion in the fourth quarter of 2026. \nDEMONSTRATION/ROUNDTABLE:\nAdditionally\, SIBA member\, Jeff Montag\, demonstrated mixing the granulated sugar and filling a candy-board for use on overwintering colonies.  In the process\, he facilitated round-table discussion and Q&A on the benefits of candy-boards\, how to make them\, and what to expect during the winter when using them.  It was a good group discussion with great input added from the club members on hand.  The completed candy-board was given away as one of several door prizes. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Honey Harvesting and Mite Management
DESCRIPTION:Duane Bischoff will be leading a discussion on honey harvesting and extraction (the topic we had lined up for July) and we'll touch on mite management and mitigation. \nWhether you’ve been harvesting for years or you’re about to do it for the first time\, bring your questions and join the conversation. \nAnother critical issue we face this time of year: Varroa mites and treatment strategies. By August\, Varroa destructor—those tiny\, red-brown parasites we all know and dread—are nearing their population peak\, just as your colonies are raising the bees that will carry them through winter. This is where it all comes together: if you want healthy bees in spring\, your success starts now. \nVarroa mites do more than just weaken bees by feeding on their fat bodies. They also spread viruses\, like Deformed Wing Virus (DWV)\, that cripple bees and entire colonies. And here’s the kicker: mite damage in late summer often doesn’t show up until it’s too late—usually as a dead-out in early spring. \nIf you’ve got questions\, ideas\, or just want to listen in and learn\, don’t miss it\, and bring a friend!

SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Round table with Jeff Montag
DESCRIPTION:For August\, Jeff Montag will lead a round table discussion on mite monitoring and control. The honey is harvested and now it's time to check in on the health of your hives. Seasoned beekeepers will argue that the next years bee season starts NOW because now is the time to get an accurate measurement of the mite loads in your colonies. Now is the time to understand if you really need to treat your colonies before the weather gets chilly and time runs out. Bees that go into the winter with higher mite loads get sick and end up perishing in the spring from a variety of diseases. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Mike Bentz
DESCRIPTION:Our own Doc Bentz will present on "Post-harvest clean-up and Winter Preparation." What to do with our supers after robbing the last honey harvest and how should we store the over the winter? Winter preparation keeps the beekeeper just as busy as waking up the hives in the spring. After a long\, tiring season\, it's important to pay due attention to winter storage and clean-up so that our drawn comb and other equipment is ready to go for the next season. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Tyson Hermes
DESCRIPTION:Tyson Hermes will cover the topic of splits! Have you wanted to increase your apiary without purchasing packages or nucs from other beekeepers?  Then this is the talk for you. Tyson will explain a simple way of splitting a winter-survivor colony to produce 3 or 4 (up to 8!) new colonies! Splits also help facilitate a robust honey crop and is a form of varroa control as it disrupts the brood with what is called a brood-break. \nTyson Hermes is a Catholic\, a husband to Julie\, a dad to 3 kids\, a beekeeper for 14 years\, a construction business owner\, a ski instructor\, and an Erlanger city councilman. When Tyson started beekeeping\, he was mentored by Jim Orem and Paul Lageman.  Since then\, Tyson has mentored dozens of new beekeepers\, and frequently gives talks to generate interest in the craft. Tyson’s primary goals in beekeeping is to produce nucs for sale\, and to help new beekeepers get started. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA Monthly Meeting - Bryan Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Copeland will cover the topic of building swarm traps and trapping swarms. This is a good one even for new beekeepers. Instead of buying bees and bringing them in from another region\, why not trap local bees already acclimated to our area\, and best of all\, they're free! Building a couple swarm traps is simple\, and cheap! It's time to get those traps ready as swarm season is among us! Bring your questions as we'll break out into a round table discussion after Bryan's presentation. \nIf you've missed a previous newsletter\, find them all archived here. \nSIBA Meetings occur the 3rd Thursday of each month through the year with topics being added to the event ahead of each meeting. SUMMARY:SIBA at the State Fair Saturday August 12th
DESCRIPTION:The Indiana State Fair is coming up fast. August 12th is the day the club is on board to run the Honey booth in the Hort/Ag building. We could use your help! The Fair is the main fundraiser and an important educational opportunity for the Beekeepers of Indiana. It is a good chance for SIBA to raise some funds as well. The club will benefit from your help and SIBA is going to cover your cost of parking. \nMost of what you will do is retail work and no great beekeeping knowledge is required. You get into the Fair for free\, work a six hour shift and have the rest of the day for your own fun. The booth makes a great place to regroup and cool down and store things you don’t want to drag around the grounds till you go home. Please come join us! \n\n \nContact Jeff Montag with any questions! \nVisit the fair website by clicking here.
