October Field Day at the Bee Barn – Hive Repairs

It was a small but engaged turnout for the Field Day on October 17th at Jim Orem’s Bee
Barn where the topic was hive construction, assembly, and repair. Don Burkart presented
tips and tricks for assembling bottom boards, hive bodies, inner covers, telescoping
covers, and frames. All of these components were assembled during the meeting using
Gorilla Glue, nails, and 1/4" staples.

Kirk Womack then covered repairing hive boxes using a biscuit cutter and small pieces of
pine boards to get a couple more years of service out of them.

Finally, Clint Gaston showed us some small gadgets, that he 3D printed, which are
attached to hive box corners and used as pry points for your hive tool when separating
boxes during inspections.

As always, a great pitch-in lunch was served...including 3 different types of pies.
This was the last Bee Barn Field Day for 2026. Jim will announce when the 2027 Field Days will begin during our regular monthly SIBA meetings this winter.
